A hostage situation in Cedar Park has ended peacefully a day after three police officers were shot and wounded as they responded to a disturbance call.

It started Sunday afternoon in a in a neighborhood near Leander High School.

Cedar Park Shooting

At approximately 3:10 p.m., Cedar Park police responded to a call at 2304 Natalie Cove where a mother had reported that her son had just kicked in the door and was acting very aggressively.

When officers entered the home, they were immediately met with gunfire, injuring three officers.

Cedar Park Police returned fire, but it appears the suspect was not injured. He has been identified as 26-year-old Joseph DeSean Taylor.

The officers were able to get outside to safety and call for help, and were transported to a nearby hospital shortly after with non life-threatening injuries.

After more than 50 shots were exchanged, Taylor barricaded himself inside the home with three family members: the mother, a juvenile, and a third family member of an unknown age.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including DPS, the Central Texas SWAT Team, Round Rock Police, Williamson County Police, Pflugerville Police, Leander Police, and others.

Cedar Park Police said on Twitter Monday morning that the man and his mother “had come out of the house peacefully” about 9 a.m. An hour earlier, police held a press conference and announced that the man had released his brother, sister and a family pet.

Police had been in negotiations with Taylor for more than 16 hours since the officers were wounded Sunday afternoon.

Cedar Park Chief Police Mike Harmon said the police department had a history at the residence, but did not provide details, including when police last visited the home. He noted that the subject is in his mid-twenties and has a history of mental illness.
