February 25, 2021

Indio police on Wednesday released body-cam footage and recorded 911 calls from last month’s encounter between officers and a man who died while being taken into custody.

The footage is from Jan. 22 when Jose Albert Lizarraga Garcia, 41, died while being arrested by police investigating reports of a man behaving strangely outside the Cardenas Market on Highway 111.

According to an introduction included with the 20-minute video, which the department posted to YouTube, viewers will see footage of Lizarraga Garcia as he enters three businesses and hear 911 recordings of callers who request police because he is “exhibiting bizarre behavior.”

At about 4:20 p.m., on Jan. 22, Lizarraga Garcia ran into an AM/PM off of Highway 111. According to store surveillance footage, he grabs a bucket of water and throws it outside. He then grabs what appears to be some kind of merchandise.
